– Tori Egherman do blog View from Iran.

“Iran is not a dictatorship because it is not run by any one person or group. Despite all of its draw backs and problems and abuses, Iran does have a constitution and an evolving legal system.

It is more like a government of competing groups of oppressors. Is there a name for this type of government? Not sure. I would not call Iran a democracy just because it holds elections. A democracy needs independent civil institutions and a free press in order to thrive. Iran does not have many independent civil institutions and does not have a free press. In Iran, they joke that “we have free speech. We just do not have freedom after speech.” That’s the case.”

“Iran has a private press, but it is censored and harassed by the powers that be. People generally won’t have problems speaking their minds as long as they do not organize. So you can be on the street talking trash about the system as long as you are only talking to friends or to the butcher or the taxi driver and not trying to organize an opposition movement. There are topics that are off limits such as the Supreme Leader, who is now Khamenei.

If you are being watched by the Intelligence services, you could find yourself in a world of trouble for anything at all: your email, a satellite dish, alcohol. It just depends on how threatened the regime is by you.”

Ficaram esclarecidos? Eu fiquei. 🙂
